Good morning! It’s
about 8 am on Wednesday morning. I wrote something last night I was doing on
my tablet and the internet went down and the only thing that was saved was two
sentences. So today I have my laptop
fully charged and it’s ready to go for the day.
It’s sunny and pretty nice right now but last night it was
still and sticky out. The kids were my
alarm clock sometime while it was still dark out. I thought I was dreaming.
This morning is a little different than normal. Just before
our arrival a little boy named Mickey passed away. Today is his funeral. Mickey has been sick for a long time and has
always had a hard time breathing due to having TB. He had so much scarring in his lungs he
needed to have oxygen.
He had just been released from the hospital, which was
housed in a tent with many people. The beds are about 6 inches from each other
and your bathroom is the bucket next to your bed. I don’t blame him for wanting to get out of
there.
We found out his main oxygen tank was going to be about $200
and each refill $25. Some of the money
we raised was going to pay for his air. Some
of it will be used to help pay for his funeral.
Many Haitians cannot afford funerals and so their loved one waits at a
funeral home or somewhere else until money can be raised.
Last night the kids here had a big party in honor of
Mickey. They had a great time. So today we are kind of filling in while the
staff can go pay their respects to Mickey.
The able bodied kids took a bus to the funeral.
All the kids here wear uniforms. They keep them very clean and they all look
so cute in their skirts and shorts.
School is about to start for the disabled kids so we are
going down to witness that. I’ll report
more on that later. I do want to tell
you too about my experiences feeding the kids this morning later on as well.
